Nominator's project description

Professor Sabean is one of the most prominent experts on the social and cultural history of early modern Germany. By applying anthropological theories and methods, he substantially has contributed to contemporary historiography. His study of a Swabian village at the close of the eighteenth century is certainly one of the most influential, recent contributions to the history of society in its transition to the modern age. It helped to establish kinship as a central category of historical research. During his period at the Freie Universität Berlin, he will closely collaborate with Professor Claudia Ulrich and her associates on the topics of "kinship and class formation" and "incest discourses."
